Since its establishment the mosque?s services have expanded to keep up with rapidly growing demand. Madina Masjid is Newcastles first purpose built mosque and is around 5 years old. Located in Fenham, it is a two story building which incorporates two prayer halls, a wudhu area, classrooms, an office, a kitchen and a dining area. Regular talks are held in the mosque, in addition to the daily prayers and jummah. The mosque has also recently installed a radio transmitter so that people with a receiver in their house can hear the adhaan and salaah from the mosque 5 times a day, as well as the weekly jummah khutbah.

Although some may consider the architecture somewhat underwhelming compared to others in the Islamic world, this little mosque was put firmly on the map in 1977 when boxing legend Mohammad Ali visited Al Azhar to worship and to have is marriage blessed by the local Imam. A cherished landmark of South Shields.

Although the conversion of the two properties was regarded as the best solution at the time, the increase in number of Muslims in the vicinity from generations who attend the mosque has initiated a cause for the mosque committee to re consider the means of meeting existing and future needs to accommodate the growing numbers during congregation at the mosque.
